Sao Miguel Fort Brought 2 Million Tourists to Portugal Since Its Opening
According to the Nazare Council, the attraction broke the record of two million visitors earlier this week and has paved the way for the destination to become ’a global reference’ for its contemplation of nature as well as big waves at Praia do Norte, which is a must-stop for surfers, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
The Nazare Canyon Interpretive Center was opened in May 2015 and intends to transmit scientific information about the phenomenon that creates the giant waves – for which this area is known. The fort is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is open for international visitors.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveals that from January to July, 16.8 million people have visited Portugal, recording 42.8 million overnight stays. This means that the number of nights spent by tourists has increased by ten per cent compared to the same month in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.
In addition, tourists to Portugal generated €3.2 billion for the country’s wallet during this period – once again surpassing 2019 levels by some 39 per cent.
During July this year, the average revenue per occupied room peaked at €137.9, increasing by nearly ten per cent, surpassing the figures of August 2022 (which stood at €136). The average revenue per occupied room reached record-breaking highs this July, while the revenues generated from overnight stays in all hotel facilities surged, totalling 41.8 per cent.
Fazeda concluded that the data showcases that the tourism sector has fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic and it is demonstrating excellence as well as resilience. In addition, Porto was awarded as the Best European Destination for Urban Getaways, while Algarve received recognition for being the Best Beach Destination in Europe, and some other destinations were also acclaimed in several categories by the World Travel Awards.
Tourism plays an important role in Portugal’s economy as it represented around 15 per cent of the country’s cross domestic product (GDP) in pre-pandemic times. British tourists are especially important for Portuguese tourism, as it is the main source market, closely followed by visitors from the Spanish and American markets.
