Portuguese Airport Fees to Rise by an Average Of €1.60 Next Year
In 2024, the average increase in regulated fees at all Portuguese airports will be €1.60, with ANA Airports initially proposing an almost 18 per cent increase but ultimately settling on a 14.55 per cent hike, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
Lisbon will see the most significant fee increase at 16.98 per cent, which equals €2.29, while Porto’s fees will go up by 11.92 per cent, which is €0.92.
The Vinci Group company’s executive committee has modified its initial tariff update plans for national airports. The change is a response to a decrease in inflation data across the 27 European Union countries, which decreased from 9.7 per cent to 8.8 per cent.
While revising the proposals downward, the executive committee still intends to recover revenue deviations from 2022.
ANA justified the proposed increase in airport fees for the coming year in their presentation to ECO News by pointing out that the adjustment aligns with the formulas outlined in their concession contract. Additionally, it stressed that the rise in plane ticket prices has exceeded the fee increase they proposed.
Nevertheless, airlines saw the price increases as potentially harmful to the tourism sector. Ryanair, in particular, labelled the increase as “excessive and justifiable,” expressing worries that it might negatively affect the national tourism industry, especially in the Azores and Madeira.
Furthermore, other airlines, including TAP Air Portugal, voiced their dissatisfaction with the proposed changes.
The funds are required to pay air traffic controllers, ground staff, and also the personnel responsible for baggage services.
The recent fee adjustment will take effect in February. In the Azores region, the increase amounts to €0.30, in Madeira, it is €0.80, and in Faro it’s €0.82.
Moreover, there will be an additional charge of ten per cent applied to each aircraft, and it is likely that the cost will be transferred to customers as well.
The fee hike follows two previous increases earlier in the year, where the first increase added an extra €3.46, and the second involved a charge of €2.88 per passenger, introduced in September and February, respectively.
