The European country picked up the award in the European edition of the World Travel Awards for this year, as well as other 30 awards, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
“The election results from the votes of thousands of professionals in the sector, from all countries in the world, and this year Portugal won another 30 awards, among destinations, regions and products and services,” the Ministry of Economy and Services pointed out through a statement.
According to the report provided by the Portugal news, the following territories also received recognition:
- The Azores (Europe’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination), Algarve (Europe’s Leading Beach Destination)
- Lisbon (Europe’s Leading City Break Destination, Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination, and Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination)

In this regard, the Secretary of State for Tourism Commerce and Services, Rita Marques, said that the distinction in many categories in the European edition of the World Travel Awards 2022 takes on particular significance following the difficulties caused by the Coronavirus and its new variants.
Minister Marques emphasized that it is with great pride that the country sees companies as well as professionals and national tourism entities being recognized by their peers at an international level.
“All agents in the sector are to be congratulated for being up to this challenge, which is to affirm Portugal as a tourist destination of excellence, whatever the circumstances,” says the Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce, and Services, Rita Marques.
The Oscars of tourism have been awarded since 1993 by professionals engaged in the tourism sector, estimating the work developed in the tourism sector in order to help the tourism industry improve and stimulate competitiveness as well as the quality of tourism.
Portugal is among the most favorite travel destinations in Europe, opening its doors to many international visitors.
The spread of the Coronavirus led authorities in this country to impose strict entry rules, following the example of other countries worldwide, in an effort to contain the further spread of the virus; however, with the easing of restrictions, Portugal has welcomed a large number of tourists.
The figures provided previously by the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that in July alone, Portugal marked the highest record of tourists welcoming over 1.8 million tourists who stayed in accommodation spots across Portugal. The figures registered in July were higher than those registered before the virus spread.
