Portugal Urged to Speed Up Long-Term Visa Processing for Brazilians, Says Ambassador
Citizens of Brazil planning to travel to Portugal for study or work purposes and stay longer than 90 days in any 180-day period are required to obtain a long-term visa. However, many applicants face prolonged waiting times, which create barriers to accessing employment, healthcare, and education.
Brazil’s Ambassador to Portugal, Raimundo Carreiro, highlighted that of the 450,000 backlogged cases at AIMA, over 200,000 involve Brazilian nationals. He also noted incidents of discrimination and intolerance reported by Brazilians, emphasizing the importance of addressing these challenges. Despite these issues, Carreiro pointed out the strong bilateral ties between the two countries, with Brazilian investments in Portugal increasing by 8% annually, a trend expected to grow further with the ratification of the Mercosur-EU agreement.
Portugal’s Efforts to Address Visa Delays
In December 2024, António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, announced plans to reduce visa processing times, aiming to issue work visas within a month. This commitment comes as waiting periods for visas, particularly for Brazilian nationals, have reached up to six months in some cases.
Portugal faces an annual demand for 100,000 foreign workers to address labor shortages in key industries. However, visa delays have been exacerbated by the June 2025 abolition of the Expression of Interest program, which previously allowed tourists to apply for legal work status after entering the country.
By improving visa processing times, Portugal seeks to strengthen its workforce while maintaining its economic and cultural ties with Brazil.
