Portugal: Thousands of Applications Still Pending Despite Golden Visa Termination Announcement
According to a report from the Portugal News, at present, there are more than 21,000 requests related to the Residence Permit for Investment in the pre-analysis phase; of them, 7,802 are applications from foreign investor citizens, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
Based on the figures from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), there are a total of 13,562 family reunification applications through the Golden visa scheme.
The same notes that in June alone, a total of 179 Golden visas were issued, of which 114 were for real estate investment.
The main beneficiaries of Portugal’s golden visas last month were citizens of the following countries:
- United States – 47 visas
- United Kingdom – 26
- China – 17
Data from SEF also show that since the begging of this regime and until June this year, a total of 12,396 golden visas were issued, thus representing a total investment of €7,157 million.
Citizens from China (5,366), Brazil (1,229), and the US (713) benefited the most from the golden visas issued by authorities in Portugal.
Recently, the figures from the Portuguese Immigration and Border Service (SEF) revealed that investments through Portugal’s Residency by Investment Schemes surged by 27.5 per cent in the first half of this year, reaching a total of €403 million.
The same source noted that during the same period, a total of 861 golden visas were issued, of the total 475 in the second quarter, or more specifically:
- 115 in April
- 180 in May
- 179 in June
Based on SEF data, in terms of visas for grouped family members, 1,191 were granted in the first half of this year. Of them, 167 in April, 208 in May, and 192 in June. The same source noted that in January this year, 153 visas for grouped family members were issued, in February 209 and in March 262.
Earlier this month, Portugal’s government proposed to abolish new residence permits for housing investment.
The proposal was supported in the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, with votes in favour of the Socialist Party ((Partido Socialista), Bloque de Izquierda, and the Portuguese Communist Party.
The abolishment of new residence permits for investment in housing was part of the More Housing Program introduced previously by the Government of Portugal.
