Portugal Opens Its Doors to More Indian Skilled Workers
Citizens of India are eligible to work legally and safely in Portugal, as both countries’ authorities have signed a bilateral agreement that would help Indians to “carry out a professional activity” in the European country, Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced through a statement.
“This bilateral instrument will facilitate legal and safe labour migration flows between the two countries, establishing procedures for the admission of Indian citizens to carry out a professional activity, under an employment contract, in Portugal. Furthermore, it will apply to recruitment for any labour activity and whatever the duration of the employment contract, Indian workers benefiting from all the rights guaranteed by Portuguese law,” the statement published by the same Ministry reads.
The Ministry also has stressed that from the moment that the new agreement takes effect and whenever employers plan to hire workers from India, they will be required to inform the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP), which will transmit such a proposal to the authorities in India, AtoZSerwisPlus.plreports.
Through the selection process, it will be signed the employment contract while the recruited workers will be granted a visa, permitting them to travel to Portugal and carry out professional activities in the Southern European country.
Such agreement was reached during the visit of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Culture of India, together with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Francisco André, and Portuguese authorities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Portugal clarified that the ratification process would come behind while the so-called “instrument” would be put in place 30 days after the last notification.
Earlier this month, the Union Cabinet approved the agreement between Portugal and India regarding the recruitment of citizens of India to work in the European country.
According to India’s Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the agreement would strengthen cooperation and partnership between both parties’ citizens.
“It will provide new opportunities for skilled Indian workers and professionals,” the government pointed out through a statement.
Besides the recent agreement between both territories that would help to bring Indian citizens to work in the European country, Portugal is also known for its Golden Visa program that has continued to attract many wealthy Indian investors for over eight years now.
Through the Golden Visa Program, wealthy international investors are eligible to obtain permanent residency in Portugal if they invest at least €500,000 in ecotourism, organic agriculture, renewable energy, or other projects.
