Portugal Marks Record Number of Higher Education Students
Compared to the previous academic year, 2021/2022, the number of students enrolled has increased by three per cent, which converts to 12,811 more students this year – AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
However, the statistics indicate that the number of enrolled students has been sharply increasing since the 2015/2016 academic year by twenty-four per cent as in this academic year, the number of students enrolled grew to 358,450.
According to the data released by The Directorate-General For Education And Science Statistics (DGEEC) for the 2022/2023 academic year, a total of 446,000 students registered in higher school education institutions, of which 359,397 registered in public higher education and 86,631 registered in private higher education.
Furthermore, within public higher education, 223,564 students chose university higher education institutions, whereas 135,833 chose polytechnic higher education institutions.
Moreover, a rise in the number of students enrolled in the Master’s and Doctoral programs is evident – which is supported by data that show that 82,610 students enrolled in Master’s programs and 25,202 in Doctoral programs.
Out of more than 446,028 registered students, 155,082 registered for the first time in the first year.
Additionally, in the group of first-year enrollees, there was a greater representation of women than men in a wide range of academic fields, whereas male students were more dominant in disciplines such as “Information and Communication Technologies,” “Engineering, Manufacturing, and Construction” and “Services.”
Moreover, 17,822 students participated in international credit mobility initiatives like the Erasmus Program, emphasising the rising trend in the post-pandemic era.
Portugal’s appeal to international students was apparent, as it welcomed 74,597 students from abroad into its higher education system, forming 17 per cent of the overall enrollment.
This result boosts Portugal’s confidence in achieving its long-term education goals to have 60 per cent of 20-year-olds enrolled in higher education by 2030 and 50 per cent of people aged 30 to 34 with college degrees.
Previously, in February last year, it was reported that over 44 per cent of the population in Portugal currently holds a higher education degree, highlighting the nation’s dedication to educational excellence.
