Portugal Introduces New Platform to Simplify Immigration Regularization for Workers
Portugal's Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) has launched a new online platform to accelerate the regularization process for immigrants, addressing the backlog of over 400,000 pending applications.
Streamlined Regularization Process
The new platform simplifies requirements for residence permits. Applicants now only need one month of contributions instead of the previous 12-month requirement, as confirmed by immigration lawyer Klaudia Freitas. This change makes it easier for workers to regularize their status, especially those affected by misinformation or limited access to technology.
Transition After Expression of Interest Mechanism Ended
Portugal’s expression of interest mechanism, which allowed foreigners to legally reside and apply for a job seeker visa, ended last year. A transitional regime under Decree-Law No.37-A/2024 extended the period for securing an employment contract or job offer until June 3, 2024.
Second Chance for Rejected Applications
In December 2024, the government announced a second chance for nearly 108,000 immigrants whose residence permit applications were previously rejected due to unpaid fees. Deputy Secretary of State Rui Armindo Freitas and AIMA President Pedro Portugal Gaspar emphasized that a new call would allow these immigrants to resolve pending issues and reapply.
