Portugal Accelerates Recognition of Foreign Medical Degrees
Announcing the news, the Portuguese government said that all those who hold medical degrees issued by foreign institutions will have access to a “special recognition regime” aimed at hiring doctors for the country’s National Health Service, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
The decision of Portugal to accelerate the recognition of foreign medical degrees comes amid the ongoing work shortage that the country is experiencing in the healthcare sector.
Taking into account the current situation, the government notes that it is important to make changes to the current laws that the country has.
Moreover, it notes that the country should be more open to hiring foreign health professionals, regardless of whether they have obtained their degree from a Portuguese education institution or not.
As the government explains, the country has taken several steps in recent years to make the process of recognition simpler. However, not everyone has been subject to facilitated recognition rules as the country has mainly focused on those having a degree in the area of science, technology, and health.
As part of its measures, the government emphasises that Portugal will now automatically recognise foreign degrees that have already been accepted by an EU Member State.
This means that if Germany, for example, has recognised a medical degree issued by a foreign education institution, Portugal will automatically recognise it, too, without requiring the holder to undergo any additional procedures.
Portugal is just one of the EU countries that has decided to facilitate the rules for foreign healthcare workers due to shortages.
Previously, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reported that Spain’s capital, Madrid, will now permit non-EU doctors to work without holding Spanish nationality.
By making such changes, the authorities of Spain aim to attract more non-EU workers to provide services in all kinds of specialities, especially in the ones that have reported the most significant shortages, such as paediatrics and family medicine.
