Number of American Tourists to Portugal Marked New Record in July
In June, a total of 181,869 Americans visited Portugal, which was considered the most significant increase since 2013, but July figures show that there has been another record, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
“The United States are discovering Portugal,” Secretary general of the American Chamber of Commerce in Portugal (AmCham Portugal), Graça Didier, told Eco online newspaper.
Didier added that up until a few years ago, Portugal was not so visited by Americans, but the reality has shifted, and now the country is on the map of US travellers.
She added that Portugal is identified as a safe country that offers a good quality of life for those who want to live or work in this country.
It has been revealed that the trend changed in 2019, before the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants, when the US market accounted for more holidaymakers in Portugal than Brazil, while this year, the US is expected to surpass Brazil as the most significant non-European market.
According to a report provided by Portugal Resident, this means that the US will account among the top five countries with most tourists visiting Portugal, trailing only the following countries:
- The United Kingdom
- Spain
- France
- Germany
In addition, based on the Barometer of American Companies located in Portugal, the US also accounted for the fifth most significant source of tourism revenue by country of origin with a total of 7 per cent share.
According to a report provided by ECO, the new record in the number of travellers from the US who are visiting Portugal has come at a time when the US and Euro values are practically the same, permitting US travellers to spend more money in this European country.
“Americans like what they see. Portugal has history and culture, privileged climate conditions, hospitality, and Portuguese people, in general, speak English,” Didier pointed out.
Authorities in Portugal also announced that there was also noted a significant increase in the number of tourists from the following countries: Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, Czechia, Denmark, and Romania.
Recently, atozserwisplus.pt reported that a total of 24.3 million passengers were registered at Portugal’s airports in the first half of this year, marking a total of 344 per cent increase compared to the figures of the same period last year.
