Madeira Foreign Population Reaches New Record High
Data by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) shows that most new residents hold residence permits, with only one being a long-term visa holder, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
Venezuelan citizens are the main nationality group residing in Madeira, representing 19.7 per cent of the population or a total of 2,323 inhabitants. However, DREM points out that the number of foreigners of Venezuelan nationality fell by 1.3 per cent between 2021 and 2022, from 2,353 to 2,323 people.
Brits follow second with 1,391 inhabitants, accounting for 11.8 per cent of the population, while Germans represent the remaining 9.4 per cent (1,108). Altogether with Brazilians (1,391) and Italians (648), these five nationalities account for 6,556 inhabitants or 55.6 per cent of the whole population in Madeira as of December 2022.
The highest increase in population groups is noticed among Germans, who have recorded a 24.5 per cent increase, accounting for 218 more Germans holding a residence permit. In 2021, there were 888 Germans living in Madeira, which number rose to 1,106 in the following year.
DREM notes that Germans were the main drivers of the increase in the foreign population between 2021 and 2022, adding around 2.1 percentage points to the 13.3 per cent increase in population.
DREM data also revealed that the resident population in Madeira is finally heading upward after decreasing drastically between 2012 and 2018. More specifically, the population started dropping from 264,700 in 2012 to 261,700 in the following year to plummet in 2018, with 14,300 fewer inhabitants and a decrease of 5.4 per cent recorded in a six-year period.
In 2019, the number of inhabitants in Madeira started recovering – recording a 0.11 per cent increase – some 300 more inhabitants than in 2018. In the following year, the population rose by 0.47 per cent – from 250,700 to 251,900, then to 252,700, to peak at 253,300 in 2022.
The population in Madeira rose by 1.15 per cent from 2018 to 2022, accounting for 2,900 more inhabitants on the island. The numbers increased especially during the post-pandemic period, scoring more than one percentage point increase during this period (2020-2022).
