Madeira Airport Forced to Shut Down

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) previously confirmed that in May this year, a notable increase was marked in the number of passengers.
“When compared to May 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also a 42.8 per cent growth in passenger movement and 26.2 per cent in aircraft movement,” the statement reads.
Besides, it was emphasised that there was no other month of May with better performance than the one registered this year.
“Considering the accumulated 2023 (from January to May), the year-on-year changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +23.7 per cent and +37.2 per cent, respectively”, the statement notes.
In spite of the challenges with which the airport is often dealing, authorities in Madeira are continuously working in order to welcome a larger number of passengers and minimise the number of flight cancellations.
