Portugal’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, announced on November 7, 2024, that Lisbon’s airport will introduce a four-hour nightly flight ban. The decision follows findings from a working group addressing citizen complaints about noise and pollution caused by nighttime flights. The Minister described the measure as a “giant step forward” in addressing ongoing criticism from municipalities, mayors, and residents.
Night Flight Caps Regularly Exceeded
Campaign groups, including the NGO Zero, have revealed that the current cap of 92 night flights per week is frequently violated. Studies estimate that around 160 nighttime flights operate weekly, far exceeding the official limit. Protesters from the platform “Airport Out, Lisbon Improves” have called for stricter enforcement to mitigate the impact on local communities.
Passenger Numbers Reach Record Highs
Portugal’s airports have seen unprecedented growth:
