Association Urges Embassies to Address Work Visa Delays in Portugal
Brazilian nationals are facing significant delays in obtaining work visas for Portugal, with waiting times exceeding 200 days in some cases. These delays particularly affect those applying under the job search visa, introduced in 2022 as part of the mobility agreement with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), which allows citizens to stay in Portugal to seek employment.
Calls for Improved Consular Efficiency
Ana Paula Costa, the new president of the Brazilian Confederation of Labour (CBL), emphasized the need for consulates to adhere to deadlines and comply with Portuguese legislation. She described the delays as unfair, stating that Brazilian citizens should not be penalized for the inefficiency of government services.
Government Efforts to Address Delays
In June 2024, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced plans to hire 50 additional staff for consular posts to improve visa processing times. However, significant progress is still needed to meet demand.
Ambassador’s Appeal for Swift Action
Brazil’s Ambassador to Portugal, Raimundo Carreiro, has also called for urgent action to address the backlog, urging Portugal to accelerate long-term visa processing for Brazilians. The ambassador highlighted the challenges faced by immigrants with pending documentation, including difficulties accessing healthcare, employment, and education.

The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) is handling approximately 450,000 pending cases, of which over 200,000 are from Brazilian nationals.

Brazilians planning to stay in Portugal for work or study purposes for more than 90 days within a 180-day period must obtain a long-term visa. However, delays in visa issuance continue to pose significant challenges for applicants.
