3.5 Million Guests Stayed in Portugal in August Alone
According to INE, the Government Office for National Statistics of Portugal, the guests spent around 10.1 million overnight stays in Portugal in the same month, leading to the highest monthly revenue ever recorded, AtoZSerwisPlus.pt reports.
This number of guests translates into a total revenue of €878.3 million, marking a 10.4 per cent increase compared to August 2022, with €709.8 million coming from accommodation.
On the other hand, when compared to August 2019, the increase was more significant – 37.6 per cent.
Additionally, the data reveals the differences in revenues per available room (RevPAR) and the daily average rate (ADR) between 2023 and 2019. In 2023, the RevPAR stood at €108.8, marking a 6.8 per cent increase, while the ADR reached €147.8, reflecting an 8.7 per cent increase compared to 2019.
Comparing the numbers to August 2019, certain municipalities contributed the most to total overnight stays.
Lisbon, which accounted for 14.9 per cent of the total, saw a 4.3 per cent increase in overnight stays. Albufeira, comprising 11.9 per cent of the total, fell short of 2019 levels, experiencing a decrease of 12.3 per cent.
In contrast, Porto, making up 6.5 per cent of the total, experienced a significant increase with a 29.1 per cent increase in overnight stays.
In addition to the above-mentioned, INE revealed that, from January to August 2023, there were 22.2 million guests and 59.1 million overnight stays, showing significant growth of 14.4 per cent and 11.6 per cent in overnight stays compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays increased by 8.4 per cent in the first eight months of this year, with locals and non-residents contributing to this growth.
Moreover, in August 2023, there was a substantial year-on-year increase of 13.2 per cent in the number of passengers at national airports compared to August 2022, marking a historic high.
Additionally, between January and August 2023, there was a notable 23.1 per cent increase in the number of passengers compared to the same period in 2022.
These impressive numbers in overnight stays and passenger numbers come as no surprise.
